The myUL App -Delivering a Connected Student Journey—In Every Pocket
In an increasingly digital-first world, student expectations of how they interact with their university are rapidly evolving. Today’s students expect seamless, real-time access to information, services, and communication—delivered in a way that is intuitive, personalised, and always within reach. The myUL app was developed in response to these expectations, with a clear vision: to put the university experience directly into every student’s pocket.
This presentation will explore the journey behind the design and delivery from beginning to end of the myUL student engagement app at the University of Limerick. It will outline how a fragmented landscape of systems and touchpoints were brought together into a single, cohesive digital experience supporting students throughout their academic journey—from enrolment to graduation.
At the core of this initiative was a strong focus on user experience. We will discuss how student needs were identified and prioritised, and how ongoing stakeholder engagement ensured the app evolved in line with real-world usage. By placing students at the centre of the design, the project team delivered features that enhance day-to-day university life, including personalised timetables, campus navigation, and easy access to student supports and key services.
The session will also explore the practical and organisational challenges of delivering a project of this scale. Integrating multiple systems, ensuring data accuracy, and making information easily accessible required strong collaboration across the entire campus community. The presentation will share how these challenges were addressed through clear planning, close stakeholder engagement, and a flexible, phased delivery approach.
A key theme throughout is the importance of collaboration. The success of myUL was built on strong partnerships between IT, business teams, and the student body. This cross-functional approach helped align priorities, accelerate decision-making, and foster a shared sense of ownership across the institution.
Attendees will gain practical insights into what it takes to design and deliver a student-facing digital platform that not only meets expectations but actively improves engagement. The session will also reflect on lessons learned, including the importance of continuous feedback, adaptability, and maintaining a clear focus on user value.
Ultimately, myUL represents more than just a mobile app—it is a strategic enabler of a connected student experience. By bringing together essential services, communication, and information into one accessible platform, the app supports students in navigating university life with greater ease and confidence.
This presentation will be particularly relevant for professionals involved in digital transformation, student experience, and service delivery in higher education, offering both strategic perspective and practical takeaways that can be applied in similar contexts.
