Lightning Talk

Increasing Awareness Training Completion from 15% to 90% in 12 Months

Overview

We propose a session that looks at the challenges universities face in driving engagement with mandatory awareness training and how a targeted, data-driven approach can dramatically improve outcomes. Within MTU we started from a base of approximately 15-20% completion at the end of 2024, MTU achieved a completion rate of approximately 90% by the end of 2025. The session will walk through the strategies, challenges, arguments, and operational changes that help during this 12month period.

Session Format & Structure

  • Duration: 25 minutes

  • 5 minutes – Introduction

  • 10 minutes – Strategies

  • 5 minutes – Results, and lessons learned

  • 5 minutes – Q&A

Concept

Awareness training often suffers from low engagement due to competing priorities, poor communication, and lack of accountability. This talk presents a practical case study demonstrating how a structured programme transformed participation levels.

Topics discussed might include:

  • Identifying root causes of low completion rates

  • Leveraging leadership support and organisational buy-in

  • Implementing targeted communication strategies

  • Using metrics and reporting to drive accountability

  • Simplifying and improving the learner experience

  • Embedding awareness into organisational culture rather than treating it as a one-off task

Conclusion

Hopefully the session will demonstrate that improving awareness training completion is achievable with the right combination of strategy, communication, accountability and luck.

By sharing MTU’s journey from 15% to 90% completion, the attendees will hopefully take some lessons learned to help the along the same journey.
