Inside the Hacker's Toolkit - Tools, Tactics, and Real-World Attacks
As organisations continue to strengthen their cybersecurity defenses, attackers are simultaneously evolving their methods, tools, and techniques. Many of today’s most effective attacks no longer rely solely on complex malware or advanced persistent threats, but instead combine physical access, human manipulation, and readily available hardware tools.
This workshop provides an accessible, educational, and non-malicious overview of the modern attacker’s toolkit, demonstrating how common security assumptions can be undermined through physical, wireless, and social engineering vectors. The goal is not to teach exploitation, but to build awareness of how these tools function, what risks they introduce, and how organisations can better defend against them.
Using a collection of commercially available security research tools including devices such as keystroke injection tools, USB-based attack platforms, wireless reconnaissance equipment, and network testing hardware, this session will demonstrate real-world attack scenarios in a controlled and ethical environment. We will also explore physical security risks using lock-picking tools to illustrate how easily assumptions about “secure” spaces can be challenged.
Each demonstration is framed from a defensive perspective, highlighting:
How the tool works at a conceptual level
What types of vulnerabilities it targets
What indicators or warning signs defenders should look for
Practical mitigations and organisational controls that reduce risk
The workshop is designed to be highly interactive, allowing participants to observe live demonstrations and discuss how these attack techniques map to real-world incidents. Attendees will gain insight into how seemingly harmless devices such as USB cables, network access points, or everyday hardware can be repurposed in malicious contexts.
