Accessible by design: Embedding Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in IT communications

This presentation explores how the Information Technology Division (ITD) is embedding accessibility into social media and digital communications at the University of Limerick. It focuses on the development and implementation of IT Social Media Guidelines, shaped by Universal Design Learning (UDL) principles, to ensure content is clear, inclusive, and accessible from the outset.

These guidelines now inform how the Service Delivery team communicates online and in presentations, supporting more consistent and inclusive engagement across platforms.

This presentation also highlights how ITD staff, trained as UDL facilitators, are supporting colleagues through shared guidance and workshops. This peer-led approach is helping build awareness and confidence, ensuring accessibility becomes a practical, everyday consideration in digital communications.

This work is part of ITD’s broader accessibility journey, with a continued commitment to learning, refining practice, and evolving how accessibility is embedded in day-to-day communication.

Universal design is not an add-on; it is considered from the start. Applying UDL principles leads to more inclusive communication, improved user experiences, and stronger engagement overall.
